Project Title: Improvement of Industrial Energy Efficiency (IEE) in Myanmar

Energy efficiency is the cornerstone of good energy policy; it provides multiple benefits for meeting security, environmental, and economic goals. In addition, it is highly cost-effective and smart: smart from a government perspective, and smart from a business perspective.

The Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar has recognized the importance of energy efficiency and has set targets, along with the other ASEAN Countries. Myanmar’s energy efficiency goal is to, “compared to base year 2005, save 5% and 8% of the total primary energy consumption in 2020 and 2030, respectively.”

Project Objective: To promote sustained Green House Gas (GHG) emissions reduction in the Myanmar industry by: improving policy and regulatory frameworks; institutional capacity building for industrial energy efficiency (IEE); implementation of energy management system (EnMS) based on ISO 50001; and optimization of energy systems in industry.
Project components
Policy support: The project will work together with the concerned authorities in Myanmar and will provide them with international technical expertise and experience that UNIDO has accumulated in similar projects. The aim will be the development of improved policies and regulatory frameworks, incentive schemes, support programmes, energy data, and awareness which will facilitate sustainable energy efficiency improvements in industry.
Capacity Building: The project will provide training in EnMS and energy system optimization (ESO, steam, motor, compressed-air, fans, etc.) The training activities will take place in concerned institutions that will benefit from strengthened capacity in this field.
Demonstrations and Upscaling: The project will assist selected factories and industrial plants to implement energy saving measures by carrying out EnMS and/or ESO with the support of trained personnel and by accessing support programmes and incentives to be developed within this project. Demonstrations and upscaling activities will result in direct GHG emissions reductions and leverage the interest and belief in investment in IEE.
